Recently crowned South Africa’s Champion Breeders for 2016-2017, Klawervlei Stud and the farm’s resident stallions dominated proceedings at Wednesday night’s Cape Breeders/Racing Awards, held at the Molenvliet Estate in Stellenbosch.

No fewer than three Klawervlei bred horses won Breeders Awards, with Klawervlei Farm Sale graduate Edict Of Nantes named Cape Bred Champion Three-Year-Old Colt, G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas winner Just Sensual Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, and five time G1 winner Carry On Alice Champion Older Female.

Edict Of Nantes, who won both the G1 Investec Cape Derby and G1 Daily News 2000 last season, is a son of Klawervlei’s resident sire Count Dubois, while the farm’s late, great stallion Captain Al is the sire of Carry On Alice, whose victories in 2016-2017 included both the G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship and G1 SA Fillies Sprint. Carry On Alice, a G1 winner at 2,3,4, and 5, retired to stud having won11 races and earned in excess of R4.5 million.

Klawervlei, represented by six individual G1 winners last season (including the siblings Mustaaqeem and Rafeef bred in partnership with Arrowfield), also stand European Champion and four time G1 winner Twice Over, whose unbeaten son Sand And Sea (bred by the Drakenstein Stud) was named the Cape Bred Champion Two Year Old Colt.

The farm was also honoured as the Cape’s Breeder Of The Year, with Klawervlei having ended the 2016-2017 racing season with their horses having banked in excess of R31 000 000 in prize money (the farm’s top earner last season being new sire and G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas winner William Longsword).

Klawervlei bred thoroughbreds, and sires, also enjoyed their share of glory in the Cape Racing Awards on the same evening.
The ever game Captain America, a son of Captain Al, was named the Cape’s Horse Of The Year, and also garnered the Champion Miler and Older Male awards, while another son of Captain Al, Search Party, was named Cape Sprinter Of The Year.

Klawervlei bred stars Edict Of Nantes and Just Sensual, both leading contenders for Equus Awards next week, were named Cape Champion 3YO Male and Cape Champion 3YO Filly respectively.

The evening also paid fitting tribute to Captain Al, who sadly died recently. A champion sire and eight times champion sire of 2yos, the former Cape Guineas winner’s passing has left a huge hole in the South African breeding industry, but hopefully his Klawervlei Stud based sons Captain Of All and William Longsword can ensure his legacy continues.
