Klawervlei Stud, officially South Africa’s Champion Breeders for the recently concluded 2016-2017 racing season, look to be very strongly represented in the upcoming Equus Awards.

No fewer than six Klawervlei bred stars have been nominated for the Equus Awards, with Klawervlei looking to hold a strong position in several categories.

The full brothers Mustaaqeem and Rafeef (bred by Klawervlei in partnership with Arrowfield) have been nominated for the Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and Sprinter awards respectively, while other Klawervlei bred stars up for possible Equus glory include the likes of Just Sensual (Three-Year-Old Filly), Carry On Alice, William Longsword, and Edict Of Nantes.

Klawervlei sires are also strongly represented in the lists of Equus Award nominees, with the farms’ hugely exciting young sire, and four time G1 winner Twice Over, responsible for first crop Champion 2YO Colt contender Sand And Sea.
The late, great Captain Al is once again strongly represented in the nominees, with his Klawervlei Stud bred daughter Carry On Alice nominated for the titles of Champion Sprinter and Champion Older Filly/Mare, and son Captain America nominated for the Champion Older Male and Champion Miler awards.

Consistently successful sire Count Dubois’ son Edict Of Nantes, a former Klawervlei bred graduate of the Farm Sale, looks a leading contender for the award of Champion Three-Year-Old having won both the G1 Investec Cape Derby and G1 Daily News 2000, as well as finishing a close third in the G1 Vodacom Durban July, while new Klawervlei bred sire William Longsword, a son of Captain Al, has been nominated as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and Champion Miler.

The 2017 Equus Awards ceremony will be held at the Convention Centre in Emperors Palace on August 15th.
