BIG WEEKEND FOR CAPTAIN AL

The progeny of Klawervlei Stud’s late, great stallion CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) enjoyed yet another big weekend, with the deceased champion responsible for feature race winners in two different provinces.

Captain Al’s brilliant son UNDERCOVER AGENT, winner of the 2018 G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, picked up his seventh career win when downing a star studded field to land the G2 The Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes at Greyville on Friday night.
The Moutonshoek bred four-year-old, runner up in the 2018 Drill Hall Stakes, took his earnings to R4 975 000 when accounting for 2019 G1 Sun Met winner RAINBOW BRIDGE and POMODORO’s top class son CIRILLO in Friday night’s 1400m contest.
Trained by Brett Crawford, Undercover Agent races for owners Greg Bortz and Braam Van Huyssteen.

Promising two-year-old AMY JOHNSON became the 94th stakes winner sired by Captain Al when she scored a thrilling win in the Listed Perfect Promise Sprint at Kenilworth on Sunday. Bred and owned by Varsfontein Stud, Amy Johnson powered home to land Sunday’s 1200m feature by a short head for trainer Justin Snaith –who has enjoyed so much success with the progeny of Captain Al. The juvenile is a three-parts sibling to the Captain Al sired G1 winners SNOWDANCE, ALL IS SECRET and THE SECRET IS OUT.

Amy Johnson is one of ten two-year-old winners for Captain Al this season, with others including the hugely exciting CAPTAIN OF STEALTH. (Another 2yo by Captain Al, BATTLEOFTRAFALGAR, caught the eye when running third in Saturday’s G2 SA Nursery on debut).

Multiple champion sire, and eight times champion sire of 2yos, Captain Al also made news as a broodmare sire this weekend –his daughter CORAL COLOUR is the dam of unbeaten two-year-old filly BASADI FAITH. The latter made it four wins from as many starts when landing the G2 SA Fillies Nursery on Saturday, to stamp her claims as being one of the top two-year-olds in the country.

Klawervlei is currently home to two top class sons of Captain Al –triple G1 winner and Equus Champion CAPTAIN OF ALL (currently one of South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sires) and former G1 Cape Guineas winner WILLIAM LONGSWORD.
