CAPTAIN AL DOMINATES CAPE PREMIER YEARLING SALE

Buyers were keen to get their hands on some of the last progeny of Klawervlei Stud’s late, great stallion CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) at Wednesday’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale, with Captain Al sired yearlings dominating the one day auction.

Captain Al was responsible for both the top priced filly and colt at the 2019 Premier Sale, and ended the sale as the Leading Sire by Aggregate.
His Klawervlei Stud bred and consigned daughter (Lot 129) was the top lot sold at the sale, with the striking looking filly being knocked down to Anthony Stroud for R4 000 000. The imposing Captain Al filly is a full-sister to Klawervlei’s exciting and popular sire, and 2016 G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas winner, WILLIAM LONGSWORD. The latter’s eagerly awaited first yearlings are set to come up for sale in 2020.

Captain Al’s son CHESTNUT BAY (Lot 49) was the top male sold off the Premier Sale this year, when the Ridgemont Highlands consigned colt was sold to Amanda Skiffington for R2 200 000.

Other yearlings by the former champion sire and eight times champion sire of 2yos made R1 200 000, R1 100 000, and R1 000 000 respectively, with these results placing Captain Al firmly on top of the Leading Sires List. The outstanding son of Al Mufti had a total of seven yearlings gross R11 200 000 at this year’s Premier Sale, which placed Captain Al above such stallions as VAR, DYNASTY, SILVANO and TRIPPI.

The champion sire also made waves as a broodmare sire at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale, with Captain Al’s top class daughter TICK TOCK responsible for a colt (Lot 202) who was sold to Form Bloodstock for R1 800 000.

Klawervlei Stud itself enjoyed a superb sale, with the farm heading the Vendors List, and selling 48 yearlings for R30 875 000, while the farm’s well performed young Tapit sire COUP DE GRACE ended up as the Leading First Crop Sire (by Aggregate) at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The regally related Coup De Grace had 17 yearlings fetch R4 895 000 with members of his first crop making up to R750 000.
