CAPTAIN AL DOMINATES JONSSON WORKWEAR GARDEN PROVINCE STAKES

Daughters of Klawervlei Stud’s deceased champion sire CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) dominated the finish to Saturday’s G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, with Captain Al’s recent G1 South African Fillies Sprint winner CELTIC SEA relinquishing her paternal half-sister, and dual G1 winner, SNOWDANCE, into third place.

(Celtic Sea also accounted for favourite, and the Street Cry sired champion, OH SUSANNA, when beating the latter into second place).

In the process, the Sean Tarry trained Celtic Sea took her tally of wins to six and her earnings to R2 037 938.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, the 3yo Celtic Sea is owned by Antony and Angela Beck.

One of three feature race winners on the day for her trainer and jockey Lyle Hewitson, Celtic Sea now looks a leading contender for the title of Equus Champion 3YO Filly.

Her sire CAPTAIN AL also made his mark as a broodmare sire on Saturday with his maternal grandson EDEN ROC capturing the G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe for Sean Tarry, owner Chris Van Niekerk and breeders Varsfontein Stud.

Out of Captain Al’s G2 winning daughter TOWNSEND, Eden Roc is now unbeaten in three starts, with the Var colt having captured the G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion at his previous start.

The Golden Horseshoe proved a great race for Klawervlei sires, with PUTONTHEREDLIGHT (Pomodoro), INVIDIA (Twice Over) and CARTEL CAPTAIN (Captain Of All) finishing second, third and fifth respectively.
