CAPTAIN AL REMAINS ON TOP

Klawervlei Stud’s late, great sire CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) remains the highest South African bred and based stallion on the TRC Global Sires Rankings.

The rankings, which were formalized on Sunday, show Captain Al in joint 20th position, with the former South African champion tied with such top class sires as PIERRO, MASTERCRAFTSMAN and DARK ANGEL.

Captain Al also ranks above the likes of top G1 producing sires MEDAGLIA D’ORO, TAPIT, WAR FRONT, EXCEED AND EXCEL and PIVOTAL on the TRC (Thoroughbred Racing Commentary) list.

A former South African champion sire, and eight times champion sire of 2yos in this country, Captain Al is enjoying another superb season –albeit posthumously sadly.

His six black type winners for the 2018-2019 season thus far are headed by top sprinter KASIMIR, the winner of all of the G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship, G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes and G2 Cape Merchants this season, top class 3yo ONE WORLD, and recent stakes winners ALL AT ONCE, CANUKEEPITSECRET, and DOOSRA.

Captain Al also has some exceptionally promising 2yos representing him this season including the debut winners CAPTAIN OF STEALTH, SOMEWHERE IN TIME and COUSIN LIZ.

At the time of writing, Captain Al was second on the South African General Sires List, with his local runners having banked over R9 million already this season.

Another son, the remarkable Klawervlei bred CAPTAIN LARS, recently picked up the 24th win of his career when victorious at Newcastle in February.

Captain Al, who has now been responsible for a total of 93 black type winners, is also showing signs of promise as a sire of sires, with his Klawervlei based Equus Champion CAPTAIN OF ALL currently ranking as one of South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sires for 2018-2019.
