Not for the first time this season, progeny of Klawervlei Stud’s late, great sire CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) dominated the finish to a major G1 race in South Africa.
Following his daughters CELTIC SEA and SNOWDANCE’s efforts in finishing first and third in the recent G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, Captain Al was responsible for the first, second and fourth place finishers in Saturday’s G1 Mercury Sprint.

His outstanding four-year-old son KASIMIR beat Captain Al’s multiple G1 winning daughter Celtic Sea into second, with another multiple G1 winning daughter of Captain Al, Snowdance, finishing fourth.

Bred by the Drakenstein Stud, and trained by Justin Snaith (who also trains Snowdance), Kasimir stamped himself as the leading candidate for the Equus Award of Champion Sprinter by storming home to get up close home and score a half-length win in the R1 000 000 Mercury Sprint.
Ridden to victory on Saturday by Richard Fourie, Kasimir races for owners Messrs Drew & Kantor in partnership with Mesdames Doyle, Nagle, and Paul Shanahan.

His win in the Mercury Sprint, took Kasimir’s tally of wins to seven, with the gelding’s previous scores including victories in the G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship, G2 Cape Merchants and G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes earlier this season. His win on Saturday took Kasimir’s earnings to R3 250 875.

Remarkably, Mercury Sprint runner Celtic Sea is another by Captain Al with strong Equus Awards claims –the Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred sophomore is surely the leading contender for the title of Champion 3YO Filly for 2018-2019, with Celtic Sea having won more G1 races this season than any other three-year-old filly.

Captain Al, whose 2015 G1 Mercury Sprint winning son CAPTAIN OF ALL has made a fantastic start with his first 2yo runners this season, had another memorable season in 2018-2019 with his other notable performers including such graded stakes winners as MISS FLORIDA, ONE WORLD, UNDERCOVER AGENT. He has been responsible for more individual black type winners than any other South African sire in 2018-2019.
