For a second year in a row, a Klawervlei Stud based sire has been crowned Champion First Crop Sire in South Africa, with CAPTAIN OF ALL (Captain Al) claiming the South African First Crop Sire title for 2018-2019, to emulate POMODORO (Jet Master) who had the done the honours a year earlier.

Captain Of All ended the 2018-2019 season by finishing sixth on South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2Yos as well as first on the First Crop Sires List (according to NHA statistics). (The Klawervlei Stud bred Vercingetorix finished second on the First Crop List).

The triple G1 winner’s first crop of two-year-olds included 14 individual winners of 16 races, with Captain Of All’s first crop banking over R1.87 million at season’s end.

Former Equus Champion Captain Of All’s 14 first crop 2yo winners included the stakes winners WHAT YOU ARE (Devon Air Stakes) and CAPTAIN ANNE BONNY (East Cape Fillies Nursery), with his other promising early winners including the likes of SELF ASSURED, SHANGO, CARTEL CAPTAIN, INDY GO and RAINBOW UNICORN.

Bred by the Riverton Stud, and a Klawervlei Farm Sale graduate, Captain Of All was an exceptional athlete, whose wins included a four and a half length romp in the G1 Mercury Sprint, and a win under 60kgs in the G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint.

His deceased champion sire CAPTAIN AL also had a big season in 2018-2019, and ended that South African season finishing runner up (according to NHA statistics) on both the General and Leading Sires of 2Yos lists-Captain Al having more stakes winners in South Africa last season than any other sire.

His immediate success at stud gives rise to hope for Captain Of All’s paternal half-brother, and G1 Cape Guineas winner, WILLIAM LONGSWORD, with that son of Captain Al set to be represented by his first yearlings next year.
