GENERAL FRANCO, MIRAGE WOW AT KENILWORTH

Klawervlei Stud enjoyed a day to remember when two-year-olds GENERAL FRANCO (Frankel) and MIRAGE (Captain Al) (both of whom were bred by Klawervlei) made impressive winning debuts at Kenilworth on Tuesday afternoon.

The Justin Snaith trained General Franco, the top priced yearling sold at the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, stamped himself as one of the most exciting prospects around South Africa at the moment when strolling home on debut to score an emphatic three and a half length win over 1000 metres.

Under jockey Richard Fourie, the handsome chestnut stamped his authority on Tuesday’s race in no uncertain terms, and next season’s G1 Cape Guineas could well be the target for the Nancy Hossack and Jack Mitchell owned colt.

Purchased for R4 000 000 at the 2018 Premier Sale, General Franco (who is out of the Kingmambo mare Pale Moon Rising) is bred on the same Frankel/Kingmambo cross as the group winners He’s Eminent and Last Kingdom, and this regally bred colt looks a very strong South African flagbearer for his legendary sire!

Klawervlei’s late great sire CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) was represented by a fourth impressive juvenile winner in the past four days when his daughter Mirage made a winning debut over 1000m for trainer Vaughan Marshall (whose success with Captain Al’s progeny continues to grow and grow) and jockey MJ Byleveld.

The latter steered Mirage to a facile 1.75 length debut success, over a field of some very well bred fillies, and this Klawervlei Stud bred filly looks to have a bright future ahead of her.

Owned, like Captain Al’s G1 Cape Guineas winner TAP O’ NOTH by Alec and Gillian Foster, the classically bred Mirage was a R500 000 buy from the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Klawervlei will be offering a very classy draft at next week’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, with their consignment including yearlings by such top class and exciting stallions as CAPTAIN AL, DYNASTY, CAMELOT, SILVANO, TWICE OVER, TRIPPI and QUERARI.

No doubt more stars will emerge from this top class draft!
