Klawervlei Stud’s July winning sire POMODORO (Jet Master) had a memorable Saturday this past weekend, with his sons BARZALONA and BLACK THORN winning impressively at Kenilworth and Turffontein respectively.
The Candice Bass-Robinson trained Barzalona showed his class when outpointing some very promising three-year-olds to win Saturday’s Need For Speed Sprint (1000m) in comprehensive fashion. Under Anthony Andrews, the Klawervlei Stud bred Barzalona drew off in the closing stages of Kenilworth’s sprint feature to score by a length.
Racing for Mr Y Langevin and Mrs MJ Langevin, three-year-old Barzalona had shown good promise at two, when the Pomodoro gelding’s efforts included a runner up finish, to subsequent G3 Cape Classic winner TRIP OF FORTUNE (Trippi), in the Listed World Sports Betting Somerset 1200.
Pomodoro is also the sire of promising four-year-old BLACK THORN, who made it three wins from three starts over 2400m with a smart win at Turffontein on Saturday. Trained, like his sire, by Sean Tarry, the Klawervlei Stud bred Black Thorn, who races for the Hollywood Syndicate, pounced late on in Saturday’s contest to win a shade cosily by a length, and the progressive son of Pomodoro looks unlikely to stop here.
The Pomodoro sired RUSSIAN ROCK, victorious in the 2020 G1 Cape Racing Presents The Cape Guineas, went close to giving his sire a third winner on Saturday when running second, to the Klawervlei Stud bred SILVER OPERATOR (Silvano), at Kenilworth.
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro has 14 lots on offer at the 2022 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
