Klawervlei Stud’s inform sire POMODORO (Jet Master) came up with two impressive winners at Turffontein on Thursday with Pomodoro sons TOFFAS and BLACK THORN both catching the eye on Thursday.

Making just his third career start, the Candice Dawson trained TOFFAS stamped himself a three-year-old to watch when romping home to a five and a half length maiden score over 1400 metres. Under Richard Fourie, the Klawervlei Stud bred gelding simply outclassed the regally bred ALLAROUNDTHEWORLD (Oasis Dream) to win easing up at the wire. Owned by Ralphs Racing, the lightly raced Toffas looks a typically progressive son of Pomodoro and he looks sure to build on Thursday’s win!

Pomodoro is also the sire of the very smart gelding Black Thorn, who also caught the eye with his triumph on Thursday. Trained, like Pomodoro himself, by Sean Tarry, Black Thorn had finished second to his champion stablemate NEBRAAS (Vercingetorix) in the G3 The Citizen Gold Bowl last time out, but made amends in Thursday’s 1800m contest.

Under Keagan De Melo, the Klawervlei Stud bred gelding pulled out more in the closing stages to win by nearly a neck, with Black Thorn’s beaten rivals including the likes of YOUCANTHURRYLOVE (Gimmethegreenlight), SAVANNAH STORM (Sudden Storm) and former G1 SA Derby winner OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE (Elusive Fort). The uber consistent Black Thorn, who races for the Hollywood Syndicate, has now won or been placed in 13 of his 16 starts and he has already earned over R440 000 in prize money.

His sire Pomodoro has had another good season with his flagbearers including G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner EPSOM GIRL, G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes runner up RUSSIAN ROCK, and promising two-year-old RETURN TO RUSSIA.

South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro has 13 lots on the upcoming CTS Farm Yearling Sale.
