Klawervlei Stud’s G1 Cape Guineas winning stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) has been in fine form of late, with the strapping son of Captain Al having come up with a stream of smart winners this season.

His great run continued at Turffontein on Saturday, when William Longsword’s three-year-old son CIAN THE CONQUEROR made the perfect start to his racing career when making a winning debut on Charity Mile day.

Trained by Corne Spies, the gelded Cian The Conqueror exploded through late in running, to account for some blue blooded thoroughbreds, to land Saturday’s Welcome To Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile Day Maiden Plate (1160m) by half a length, going away.

It was a fine performance from the Gavin Jooste owned Cian The Conqueror, who was still very green in running, and he looks a horse worth following over the coming months.

Bred by Boland Stud, Cian The Conqueror is out of a mare by DYNASTY (Fort Wood) and is thus closely inbred to Dynasty’s sire FORT WOOD (Sadler’s Wells).

He is not the only debut winner for his sire this season, with William Longsword filly SHIPOLIA making a winning debut at Hollywoodbets Greyville earlier this week.

William Longsword struck again in the third race at Turffontein on Saturday when his Listed Secretariat Stakes winning daughter BON VIVANT downed the G1 winners UNDER YOUR SPELL (Capetown Noir) and champion RAIN IN HOLLAND (Duke Of Marmalade) to win the Furious Room Coffee Shop Now Opened Pinnacle Stakes (1400m).

The former Cape Guineas winner also enjoyed success at Sunday’s Cape Racing Ready To Run & 2YO Unbroken Sale, where William Longsword sired two-year-olds made up to R450 000.

One of the very best sons of his multiple champion sire, William Longsword is currently higher on the South African General Sires List than such notable stallions as TRIPPI (End Sweep), ELUSIVE FORT (Fort Wood), FUTURA (Dynasty) and DYNASTY (Fort Wood).
