Klawervlei Stud’s July winning sire POMODORO (Jet Master) has had an excellent week this week thus far, with Pomodoro’s son TCHAIKOVSKY winning at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday and Pomodoro supplying three more winners at the Vaal on Thursday.
The Candice Bass-Robinson trained Tchaikovsky claimed the fourth win of his career when he stormed home to land the spoils in the fourth race at Kenilworth on Wednesday. Under Morne Winaar, the four-year-old turned it on in the final stages of Wednesday’s RaceCape Powered by Hollywoodbets Cape B Stakes (1000m) by three-parts of a length.
Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Tchaikovsky, who had reeled off a hatrick of wins earlier in his career, races for Mr Y Langevin & Mrs M J Langevin. The gelding has done little wrong in his career so far, with Tchaikovsky having won or been placed in 11 of 17 starts.
His versatile sire Pomodoro enjoyed a fantastic day at the Vaal on Thursday when the son of Jet Master supplied three winners of the eight races run on Thursday. Pomodoro’s first success on Thursday came when his son FULLY LOADED stormed home to break his maiden when that gelding won the fourth race at the Vaal. Under a strong ride from an inform S’Manga Khumalo, three-year-old Fully Loaded hit the front 100m from home and kept finding more to win gamely by a neck.
Bred by Klawervlei Stud, the Fabian Habib trained Fully Loaded races for Messrs D Chinsammy, E Naicker, G J Nassif, J Nassif & Tri-Deal Sixteen CC.
His sire struck again on Thursday when Pomodoro filly HAVE A PARTY ran out a convincing winner of the sixth race on the card, the Play Soccer 6,10 and 13 Maiden Plate (F&M) over 1600 metres. The Corrie Lensley trained three-year-old was given a fine ride by Muzi Yeni, who bought Have A Party with a sustained late which saw the filly get up close home and win going away by a length and three-quarters. The race was a great one for Pomodoro, whose daughters Have A Party, SECRET RECIPE and IMPRESSION ran 1-2-4 respectively.
Bred by Oldlands Stud, the lightly raced Have A Party is owned by Mind Gym CC T/A The Grid (Nom: G K Reid).
Pomodoro is also the sire of smart three-year-old RIVER ROMEO, who demolished his rivals when running out a brilliant winner of the seventh and penultimate race on Thursday. Under Gabriel Pieterse, the Paul Matchett trained gelding quickly got to the front in Thursday’s 2000m contest, with the gelding keeping up the gallop as the field turned for home. River Romeo kicked again 400m from home, and powered away to score as he liked by four and a quarter lengths.
It was a smart performance from the Mano Pandaram owned River Romeo, who had been rated good enough to line up in the G1 World Sports Betting SA Derby earlier in the season. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, River Romeo was one of two sons of Pomodoro to contest this year’s SA Derby.
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, and sire of G1 winners RETURN FLIGHT and RUSSIAN ROCK, Pomodoro has seven yearlings on offer at the upcoming Cape Racing Winter Mixed Sale.
