Klawervlei Stud’s G1 Vodacom Durban July winning sire POMODORO (Jet Master) has had a purple patch of late, with the versatile stallion responsible for a host of winners all over South Africa in recent weeks. Pomodoro’s good run continued on Thursday when his two-year-old son MOUNT PILATUS made a winning debut at the Vaal.
Trained by Paul Matchett (who also handles Pomodoro’s promising son RIVER ROMEO), Mount Pilatus showed tremendous courage in landing the spoils in Thursday’s Racing240 For Racing. For You Maiden Juvenile Plate (1200m) under a fine ride from Philasande Mxoli.
Mount Pilatus kept finding more in the closing stages, and, after fighting out a thrilling duel with eventual runner up HAWKBILL (Elusive Fort), went on to win by a short-head.
The colt races for Bryan and Taryn Spong.
Bred by Clifton Stud, Mount Pilatus was originally a R170 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale, before his current connections went to R293 500 to secure him from the 2023 March Online Auction.
His sire went close to having a double on Thursday, with Pomodoro filly INEVITABLE finishing a close-up third in the fourth race on the card.
Pomodoro is no stranger to siring high-class juveniles with the son of Jet Master also responsible for the likes of Champion 2YO Filly RETURN FLIGHT, G2 SA Nursery runner up CIRILLO, G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery queen EPSOM GIRL and Listed Devon Air Stakes winner CARALLUMA among others.
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro has seven yearlings entered for the upcoming Cape Racing Winter Mixed Sale.
