Klawervlei Stud’s Cape Guineas winning stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) is having another fine season in 2023-2024, and the inform sire struck yet again when his son RULERSHIP won the G3 Betway Lebelo Sprint (1000m) at Turffontein on Saturday.
In the process, the Tony Peter trained gelding made it three wins on the bounce while claiming his biggest victory to date.
Under Calvin Habib, four-year-old Rulership was always up with the pace in Saturday’s G3 feature, and he quickened up smartly in the closing stages to score a shade cosily by half a length.
Bred by Cecil Baitz, who owns Rulership in partnership with Dr Gary Baitz, Rulership has now won six of 18 starts for earnings of more than R570 000.
His sire went close to having a double at Turffontein on Saturday, with William Longsword’s daughter ICE STAR finishing a close up second in the eighth race on the card.
Rulership is one of several high-class flagbearers for his sire this season, with William Longsword also the sire of the classy MELECH and G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants/Listed Golden Loom Handicap winner DYCE.
