Klawervlei Stud’s red hot sire WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) looks to have a very smart son to his name in the form of MELECH. The latter downed a top-class field when victorious in a Pinnacle Stakes at Turffontein on Thursday afternoon and feature races now beckon for the progressive Melech.
Trained by Roy Magner, four-year-old Melech came into Thursday’s Betway Pinnacle Stakes having beaten 2023 G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner LADY OF POWER (Master Of My Fate) over 1200 metres last time out.
The gelding duly made it back-to-back wins with a stellar performance under jockey Gavin Lerena. Racing seven lengths back early on, Melech powered home down the inside to get up and win a good race by three parts of a length.
In the process, the John Finlayson owned Melech accounted for Listed Betway Spring Spree Stakes winner QUANTAUM THEORY (Querari), graded stakes winners MAIN DEFENDER (Pathfork), SWING UPON A STAR (Elusive Fort) and EYE OF THE PROPHET (Gimmethegreenlight), as well as British group winner MUJBAR (Muhaarar).
Bred by Riverton Stud, Melech, unbeaten in two starts over 1200m, has now won six of just ten starts and he looks destined for bigger and better things.
Melech’s sire William Longsword had enjoyed a double at Hollywoodbets Greyville the day before, with William Longsword sired runners KENNEDY and WILLIAM RUFUS victorious in the sixth and eighth races on the card respectively.
William Longsword, whose star son DYCE has won all of the G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship, G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants and Listed Golden Loom Handicap this season, has four lots on offer at the upcoming Cape Yearling Sale including a filly (Lot 45) out of G3 Man O’ War Sprint winner EXQUISITE TOUCH (Var).
