Klawervlei Stud’s resident stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) had a fine season in 2022-2023, and the son of Captain Al’s great form has continued into the new South African racing season.

Last week, William Longsword was responsible for more winners than any other locally based stallion in South Africa, with the former Cape Guineas winner wracking up five individual winners.

The Klawervlei stallion struck first last week when his G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes winning son DYCE showed his class with an eye catching win at Turffontein. Despite returning from a lengthy layoff, the Lucky Houdalakis trained entire produced a smart turn of foot to reel in his rivals and claim the Betway Pinnacle Stakes (1200m). In the process, the Davy Shawe bred and owned five-year-old accounted for such high-class stakes winners as PAISLEY PARK (Gimmethegreenlight), BON VIVANT (William Longsword), TEAM GOLD (Twice Over) and G1 Wilgerbosdrift H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes hero MK’S PRIDE (Willow Magic).

William Longsword’s second success last week came when his Weichong Marwing trained daughter ANNEWITHAN E romped home to an eight length maiden score at the Vaal on Thursday afternoon. Under Sam Mosia, the Terry Andrews bred three-year-old put daylight between herself and her rivals to win as she liked for owners Messrs W E Cyril & W Marwing.

The Klawervlei resident’s great form carried over into Friday, where William Longsword’s daughter IMPRESSIVE NESSIE won the first race at Fairview, and William Longsword’s son RED WILLIAM won the second race on the card.

William Longsword struck yet again when his classy son COIN SPINNER downed some high-class rivals to land the Ethekwini Municipality Pinnacle Stakes (1000m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday. One of five winners on the day for his jockey Richard Fourie, the Tony Rivalland trained five-year-old showed his class when storming home to win by just over a length and a half. In the process, the Blue Sky Thoroughbreds bred Coin Spinner accounted for a field which included former Equus Champion GOOD TRAVELLER (Visionaire) and William Longsword’s smart son RULERSHIP among others.

Now a six-time winner, Coin Spinner races for Messrs Sadha Naidoo,R Maingard & Mrs Mary Liley.
