For the second time in three years, a colt bred by Klawervlei Stud triumphed in the Cape’s most famous horse-race. Following up the Klawervlei bred ONE WORLD (Captain Al)’s victory in the 2020 G1 Sun Met, fellow Klawervlei bred KOMMETDIEDING (Elusive Fort) showed his class when downing a superb field to capture Saturday’s G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met at Kenilworth racecourse.

A R55 000 buy from the 2019 Klawervlei Farm Sale, Kommetdieding, winner of the 2021 Vodacom Durban July, became the first horse in ten years to complete the G1 Vodacom Durban July/Met double with his stylish triumph on Saturday.

Trained by Michelle Rix and Harold Crawford, the Ashwyn Reynolds owned four-year-old stayed on to account for dual G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner JET DARK (Trippi), with dual G1 winner LINEBACKER (Captain Of All) running on strongly to claim third.

The 2022 Met was a complete triumph for Klawervlei -who not only bred the victorious Kommetdieding but also third place finisher Linebacker. (Met fourth and fifth place finishers were both sired by the Klawervlei based TWICE OVER (Observatory).)

Saturday also proved another tremendous result for Klawervlei’s late, great sire CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti). Not only is Captain Al broodmare sire of Kommetdieding, his champion, Klawervlei based son CAPTAIN OF ALL is sire of Linebacker.

Captain Al is also sire of brilliant filly CAPTAIN’S RANSOM-who scored a remarkable win in Saturday’s G1 Schweppes Majorca Stakes. Trained by Justin Snaith, the Moutonshoek bred Captain’s Ransom appeared beaten with 200m left to race, but Richard Fourie coaxed a dazzling turn of foot from the classy filly and the pair got up to win the race for a second year running by just under half a length. Owned by Suzette Viljoen, Captain’s Ransom has now won ten of just 12 starts (her wins include four G1 successes), and clearly rates as one of the very best daughters of her outstanding sire!
