Klawervlei Stud’s deceased champion sire CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) has some very promising three-year-olds to his name this season, and this group includes a very well-bred colt in the form of REGIMENTAL.

The latter justified tote favouritism when making a winning debut over 1250m at Durbanville on Saturday where the Klawervlei Stud bred Regimental made much of the running to score a cosy 0.4 of a length win.

Regimental, who, like the Captain Al sired Met winner HILL FIFTY FOUR, is inbred to Gay Missile, was backed down to start a 11-10 favourite for Saturday’s sprint and he duly lived up to expectations.

Jockey Corne Orffer was impressed by the Captain Al colt, and described Regimental as a “smart colt” in the post-race interview.

The son of Captain Al is trained by Brett Crawford (whose charges also include the future Klawervlei sire, and Captain Al sired G1 winner, UNDERCOVER AGENT), and is owned by Mr & Mrs Beck, Messrs Brugman & Elser, Mrs Doyle, Dr Warner, Ecurie des Monceaux & Thurloe South Africa.

Regimental joins the likes of G1 winner MISS FLORIDA, Perfect Promise Sprint winner AMY JOHNSON, the unbeaten CAPTAIN OF STEALTH, impressive recent winner SUCCESSION, and Kenilworth Fillies Nursery first and second place finishers COUSIN LIZ and MIRAGE.

Also sire of last season’s Champion First Crop Sire CAPTAIN OF ALL, Captain Al is currently responsible for 97 stakes winners and it is surely only a matter of time before he is represented by a remarkable 100th individual black type winner.

Captain Al also made news at Turffontein on Saturday –he is the broodmare sire of the very impressive, Klawervlei Stud bred debut winner TROPIC SUN (who was produced by the Captain Al mare CARIBBEAN DREAM).
