Klawervlei Stud’s exciting young stallion POMODORO (Jet Master) enjoyed a big day at Turffontein on Saturday, when his daughter RETURN FLIGHT captured the G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks and son CIRILLO ran a cracking second in the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes for trainer Sean Tarry and owner Chris Van Niekerk.

Both Return Flight (out of a SPECIAL PREVIEW mare) and Cirillo (out of a Lake Coniston mare) are members of their multiple G1 winning sire’s first crop.

The Mike Sharkey bred Return Flight, the Equus Champion 2YO Filly of 2017-2018, had captured the G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic at her previous start and duly collected another leg of South Africa’s Triple Tiara with a sterling win in the SA Oaks on Saturday.
Under jockey Piere Strydom (who had won the 2012 G1 Vodacom Durban July on Pomodoro himself), Return Flight showed her class by staying on to post a 1.8 length win in Saturday’s classic.

In the process, the champion, whose previous wins include the 2018 G1 Thekwini Stakes, took her tally of wins to five, from just ten outings, and her earnings to R1 919 475.

Cirillo went close to providing Pomodoro with another G1 win when beaten under a length by Equus Champion SOQRAT in Saturday’s Horse Chestnut Stakes. In the process, the Riverton Stud bred colt took his earnings to over R4 500 000.

A son of seven times champion sire JET MASTER and Broodmare Of The Year GOLDEN APPLE Pomodoro also received a boost to his pedigree page when his close relative SILVER SPECTRUM got off the mark impressively on Saturday. The gelded 3yo Silver Spectrum (who is also a ¾ brother to Oaks Trial winner CHARIOT OF GOLD) shed his maiden by maiden two lengths when scoring over 1400m for trainer Sean Tarry, owner Chris Van Niekerk and jockey Lyle Hewitson at Turffontein. Bred by Klawervlei, Silver Spectrum is out of the Spectrum mare Golden Spectrum –a half-sister to Pomodoro himself.

South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro has five lots on offer at the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale including a colt (Lot 75) from the same family as Cartier Champion MINDING, a filly (Lot 123) whose dam is a full-sister to G1 Singapore Cup hero LIZARD’S DESIRE, and a half-brother (Lot 402) to G2 Southern Cross Stakes winner JO’S BOND.
