Klawervlei Stud’s July winning stallion POMODORO (Jet Master) had a day to remember when he supplied a trio of winners at Turffontein on Saturday.
All three of Pomodoro’s Saturday winners were trained by Sean Tarry – who trained Pomodoro himself with such success.
Pomodoro’s first success on Saturday came when his three-year-old daughter METEORIC captured the third race, a maiden plate over 1200m, in gutsy fashion. Under Lyle Hewitson, the Klawervlei Stud bred filly stayed on smartly to record a one-length win while scoring for owner Chris Van Niekerk.
Pomodoro’s second success at Turffontein came when his Klawervlei Stud bred son BALLON D’OR made much of the running to land Saturday’s eighth race in front running fashion. The gelding, now a three-time winner, was given a superbly judged ride by Lyle Hewitson, who kept his mount going in the closing stages to score by just over three-parts of a length. Out of a mare by Doowaley, Ballon D’Or races for Sean Tarry Racing (Pty) Ltd.
Pomodoro’s day on Saturday ended in fine style when his classy son CORNISH POMODORO flew up, from off the pace, to land the ninth and final race on Turffontein’s card. Under Lyle Hewitson, the talented gelding motored home in the closing stages to win by a head, while conceding weight to both the runner up and third place finishers. A contender for the 2020 G1 World Sports Betting Gauteng Summer Cup, Cornish Pomodoro (who was bred by Mrs Mackenzie) races for Chris Van Niekerk.
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, POMODORO is a proven sire, whose best progeny include champion RETURN FLIGHT and Guineas victor RUSSIAN ROCK.
