Klawervlei’s homebred sire WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) continues to churn out winners all over South Africa, and the former Cape Guineas winner was at it again when supplying two more winners over the weekend.
William Longsword struck first this weekend when his regally bred son DOWNING SEVEN captured the fourth race at Fairview on Friday. A four-year-old, the Jacques Strydom trained gelding hit the front 200m from home in Friday’s Racing 240 For Racing. For You Classified Stakes (1900m) before powering away to score by two and a quarter lengths.
The Ralphs Syndicate bred Downing Seven, who was ridden to victory by Robert Khathi, was making it back-to-back wins, with the gelding racing for Messrs Andre van Schaik, E R Gertenbach, R J Munien, J V A Strydom, Mrs M O Strydom and the Money Talks Syndicate.
William Longsword also had success at Turffontein on Sunday, where his son BIRTHRIGHT romped home to land the Maiden Plate (1600m) convincingly. Under Kaidan Brewer, the Alec Laird trained Birthright was in front a long way from home and stayed on strongly to shed his maiden by two and three-quarter lengths. Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, three-year-old Birthright, who is yet to finish out of the first four, races for Messrs G C Cornwall, L Clark and J P Rey.
Currently eighth on the South African General Sires List, William Longsword has been responsible for more winners this season than LANCASTER BOMBER (War Front), SILVANO (Lomitas), FUTURA (Dynasty) and TRIPPI (End Sweep).
