Message from John Koster
We are delighted you have taken the time to visit the Klawervlei website. We trust you will enjoy learning more about our heritage and most importantly – our horses.
Our search for the perfect thoroughbred drives us daily to do what we do best. We hope you will be infused with a sense of our passion for horses, a concert with nature and community-based way of life.
A boutique-style stud farm, it is a privilege and a pleasure to welcome horse lovers from around the globe, to interact with our team and thoroughbred racehorses.
A journey through three generations and two farms
KLAVERVLEI STUD was founded in 1953 by John’s grandfather Ralph Koster in Beaufort West. Ralph imported broodmares from the best Irish and English families to his Karoo farm. These mares provided Klawervlei’s current genetic pillars. John has built on this remarkable legacy by expanding the current broodmare band with local and international mares of the highest quality.
A story about a man and his horse
KLAWERVLEI STUD is the union of partners, people and thoroughbreds who share the common passion of breeding the perfect thoroughbred. Their common calling is to ensure a sustainable stud working in harmony with nature by using the best farming practices. Their quest for perfection is creating a community-based lifestyle so as to live, learn, and labour in harmony.
Against a breathtaking backdrop of mountains and rivers
KLAWERVLEI STUD is based east of Bonnievale on the banks of the Breede River. Nestled against a backdrop of breath-taking scenery, the Breede river valley’s unique climate and mineral-rich soils are renowned for the breeding of high-quality thoroughbreds
