Klawervlei Stud’s inform stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) continues to churn out winners all over South Africa. The Cape Guineas was at it again when he came up with a trio of winners, at three different tracks, this weekend.

His first success came when his son WILLIAM THE FIRST won the ninth and final race at Fairview on Friday. The Gavin Smith trained gelding defied his starting price when he hacked up, under Stallone Naidoo, to land Friday’s Next Fairview Racemeeting Friday 22 November MR 68 Handicap (1300m) by two and a quarter lengths. Bred by Cheveley Stud, William The First, who is owned by Denver Moodley, was winning for a second  time when he scored on Friday.

William Longsword is also the sire of progressive filly CAPTAIN’S DESTINY, who made it back to back wins when she won at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday. The Vaughan Marshall trained four-year-old  was given a fine ride by Oswald Noach to claim Saturday’s CRS Summer Sale Class 4 (F&M) by nearly half a length. Bred by Klawervlei, Captain’s Destiny, who fractured her pelvis earlier in her career, races for JP Koster and Byron Norval.

Classy mare SHIPHOLIA provided her sire with his third winner over the weekend when she won a good race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday. Under Marco Van Rensburg, the five-year-old came with her challenge 200m from home, and she stayed on nicely to win by just over a length. Trained by Gareth Van Zyl, the Klawervlei Stud bred Shipholia, who races for the Hollywood Syndicate, has now won five times with her wins including the 2023 New Turf Carriers eThekwini Sprint.

William Longsword, whose close relative GIMME A PRINCE (Gimmethegreenlight) caught the eye when third in Saturday’s G3 Cape Mile, is having a fine season in 2024-2025. His flagbearers this season include the likes of G2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge winner BACK IN BUSINESS as well as star sprinter DYCE.

Not only did the Cape Guineas winner’s star son Dyce win impressively on Monday, but William Longsword filly ICE STAR claimed the Listed Betway National Colour Stakes on the same card.

Trained by Fabian Habib, the four-year-old picked up her biggest win to date when she won Monday’s R250 000 Listed contest.

Under a fine ride from Piere Strydom, Ice Star stormed home to get up close home and win by a neck. The strapping filly, who had finished third in the 2023 G3 Joburg Tourism Carry On Alice Stakes, was winning for a fifth time on Monday, with Ice Star having now won her last two starts.

William Longsword’s G1 winning son DYCE had claimed his tenth career win when victorious in the race prior to Ice Star’s feature race win, and it is safe to say that William Longsword is in red hot form!

The latter is having a wonderful season in 2024-2025, with the son of Captain Al’s other flagbearers including the likes of G2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge/Listed Betway Spring Spree Stakes winner BACK IN BUSINESS and the promising filly WILLY MEET AGAIN, among others.

His G1 winning half-sister REAL PRINCESS (Trippi) continues to add lustre to this remarkable family with Real Princess’ daughter GIMMIE’S COUNTESS a leading contender for this season’s G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas.

Klawervlei Stud’s G1 Cape Guineas winning sire WILLIAM LONGSWORD has come up with a real star in the form of DYCE. One of South Africa’s best sprinters, the classy Dyce picked up his tenth win when bolting up at Turffontein on Monday.

Under Piere Strydom, the brilliant six-year-old defied 62kgs to win Monday’s Betway Pinnacle Stakes (1160m) in convincing style. Dyce, who is trained by Lucky Houdalakis, was always up with the pace and he simply had too much class for his rivals, striding away to win by a length and a quarter. Bred and owned by David Shawe, Dyce is unbeaten this season with the gelding having won his last three starts. 

The star sprinter also enjoyed plenty of success last season, when Dyce won all of the G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship, G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants and Listed Golden Loom Handicap.

Dyce’s previous triumphs include the 2021 G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes.

His G1 Cape Guineas winning sire William Longsword is having another good season, with the son of CAPTAIN AL (Al Mufti) currently seventh on the South African General Sires premiership.

William Longsword has two sons, ITSRAININGWILLIAM and WILLIAM IRON ARM, entered in Saturday’s G3 Cape Mile at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Klawervlei Stud’s G1 Cape Guineas winning stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) has some very smart runners to his name this season.

This tally includes the progressive filly WILLY MEET AGAIN, who won a good race at Turffontein on Thursday.

Trained by Lucky Houdalakis, three-year-old Willy Meet Again made it back to back wins with a fluent victory at Turffontein.

Under the inform Marco Van Rensburg, Willy Meet Again powered home down the inside of the track and gamely fought off runner up SPIRITED GIRL (Canford Cliffs) to win by three parts of a length.

Bred and owned by David Shawe, Willy Meet Again has won three of just five starts and looks unlikely to stop here.

Her sire William Longsword also enjoyed Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, when his son BENNI IN THE AREA ran out a good winner of the eighth and final race.

Trained by Gary Rich, the Hollywoodbets Syndicate owned Benni In The Area has won or finished second or third in each of his six starts.

It could be a big weekend for William Longsword, whose star son DYCE runs at Turffontein on Saturday, and whose daughter FESTIVAL CHIC lines up in the same day’s G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship.

Klawervlei Stud’s resident stallion TWICE OVER (Observatory) looks set for another good season in 2024-2025, and one of his very best sons won a good race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

Multiple graded stakes winner SEE IT AGAIN (Twice Over), a three-parts brother to the Twice Over sired champion DO IT AGAIN, got back on the winning track when he scored convincingly on Sunday.

Under Rachel Venniker, the Michael Roberts trained five-year-old showed the benefit of a recent gelding operation with a fluent win in Sunday’s Wakefields Estate Agents Pinnacle Stakes (1600m).

The race panned out as expected with See It Again home comfortably under Rachel Venniker with Equus Champion ROYAL VICTORY (Pathfork) close on his heels with the balance well beaten.

Owned by Nick Jonsson, See It Again is likely to be aimed at this month’s R6 000 000 G1 Betway Summer Cup.

Now a seven time winner, from 19 starts, the Drakenstein Stud bred See It Again took his earnings to R4,644,375 with his win on Sunday.

The top-class galloper has three graded wins to his name including the 2023 G1 SplashOut Cape Derby and 2023 G1 Daily News 2000, and he looks unlikely to stop here!

See It Again’s four time G1 winning sire Twice Over has had a good run of late, with his recent winners including Betway Wedgewood Handicap winner OFFICIAL SECRET and possible Grand Heritage starter CHAMPION WARRIOR.

His inform daughter SHANTA’S PRIDE made it back to back wins when running out a convincing winner of the seventh race at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Under Gavin Lerena (who is unbeaten on Shanta’s Pride), the five-year-old stormed home to score by a facile two lengths. Bred by Bush Hill Stud, the Peter Musctt trained Shanta’s Pride races for the Hollywoodbets Syndicate.

Shanta’s Pride, who has won or placed in 12 of 18 starts, is bred on the same William Longsword/Jet Master cross as 2024 Listed Secretariat Stakes winner SABRE STRIKE.

William Longsword went close to having a double on Sunday, with his promising daughter JEANNE DARC making a cracking debut at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

The Stuart Ferrie trained filly, also bred on the William Longsword/Jet Master cross, looked unlucky not to win on debut on Sunday when flying up late and just getting touched off when second in the first race carded.
