Back to back Princess Royal Stakes win for Twice Over relative

Classy five-year-old TIME LOCK (Frankel), whose fourth dam QUANDARY (Blushing Groom) ranks as the granddam of Klawervlei Stud’s four time G1 winning sire TWICE OVER (Observatory), made it back to back wins in the G3 Princess Royal Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Stakes when she won that Newmarket contest on Friday.

Placed in the Jockey Club Stakes in May and in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes on her most recent outing in July, the Juddmonte bred and owned Time Lock was the 13-8 favourite to rediscover the winning trail following a two-month break.

After being settled in third place for much of the mile and a half contest by Ryan Moore, Time Lock was asked to go about her business racing inside the final two furlongs and soon pulled clear of the pacesetting duo of Place Of Safety and Comic Book.

Barry Mahon, Juddmonte’s racing manager, said: “She obviously likes it here, that’s twice she’s won this race now. We’ll talk to the owners whether she will be retired or not. We had half an idea about whether or not to go to Hong Kong for the mile and a half race or not in December, Ryan just said that could be a good option for her depending on what’s in it.The owners would be delighted whether we retire her now or give her one more roll of the dice. She’ll retire either way at the end of this year to be bred from and she’s a nice broodmare prospect.”

Out of TIME CHASER (Dubawi), the talented Time Lock has won four of 15 starts for earnings of £260,991. Her dam Time Chaser, a full-sister to four time group winner TIME TEST (Dubawi) and half-sister to this season’s hugely exciting two-year-old COSMIC YEAR (Kingman), is out of G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner PASSAGE OF TIME (Dansili).

This is also the family of this year’s unbeaten Prix du Prince d’Orange winner OMBUDSMAN (Night Of Thunder).

Classic hope for Twice Over Relative

Klawervlei Stud’s four time G1 winning sire TWICE OVER (Observatory) is from one of the hottest families around. Not only do Twice Over’s relatives include the exciting, unbeaten OMBUDSMAN (Night Of Thunder), but they also include a hugely exciting prospect in the form of COSMIC YEAR (Kingman).

Two-year-old Cosmic Year stamped himself a horse to watch when producing a breathtaking debut in the 7f novice stakes at Sandown on Wednesday.

The Kingman colt brushed aside odds-on favourite Rock d’Oro to win by six and a half lengths and the form looks red hot given the runner-up had finished a close second to the unbeaten Champagne Stakes winner Bay City Roller last time.

Paddy Power make him a 33/1 chance for the 2025 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Sky Bet offer 20s for the Guineas and 25/1 for the Derby at Epsom.

Cosmic Year was duly named a TDN Rising Star following his breathtaking debut win.

Juddmonte’s Cosmic Year, an own-brother to G3 Prix Quincey/G3 Sovereign Stakes winner TEMPEST (Kingman), is a half-brother to the classy TIME TEST (Dubawi) and son of G1-winning dam PASSAGE OF TIME (Dansili).

The latter won five times including the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud and G3 Musidora Stakes, and is a full-sister to G2 King Edward VII Stakes winner FATHER TIME (Dansili) and half-sister to G1 Falmouth Stakes queen TIMEPIECE (Zamindar).

Passage Of Time’s granddam QUANDARY (Blushing Groom) also ranks as the second dam of Klawervlei’s high-class sire Twice Over.

Twice Over had an excellent season in 2023-2024, where his flagbearers included G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met winner DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE, G2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes hero SEE IT AGAIN and G2 Anthonij Rupert Wine Premier Trophy winner MUCHO DINERO.

Captain Of All son impresses at Durbanville

Klawervlei Stud’s inform stallion CAPTAIN OF ALL (Captain Al) has been churning out the winners of late, and he came up with another good winner when his son CAPTAIN ARROW won at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday.

Runner up in last season’s Listed City Of Cape Town Sophomore Sprint, Captain Arrow defied a six month break to win impressively on Saturday.

Trained by Candice Bass-Robinson, the four-year-old was always travelling strongly, under Aldo Domeyer, in Saturday’s Taking The Reins Class 3 (1000m) to down the speedy galloper THE ABDICATOR (No Nay Never) by a length and three quarters.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Captain Arrow, who contested the 2023 G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, races for ASSM Racing Syndicate, Andrew Brand & Wehann Smith and Klawervlei Stud.

His triple G1 winning sire Captain Of All has been responsible for a plethora of recent winners including THE SHEPHERD, LUNARCAM, and the promising filly FIERY PEGASUS. The latter has won three of just five starts and looks a feature race prospect in the making.

Champion Sprinter of 2014-2015, Captain Of All had a good season in 2023-2024 with his flagbearers including the likes of MEU CAPITANO, CAPTAIN HINDSIGHT and Listed Hollywoodbets Super League Devon Air Stakes queen WHISTLE THE TUNE.

Sunday treble for William Longsword

Klawervlei Stud’s inform stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) had yet another good day on Saturday when he came up with a trio of winners.

Saturday’s results represented a fine strike rate for G1 Cape Guineas winning son of Captain Al, with William Longsword having just five runners on the day -one of those five, RULERSHIP, ran second to his paternal half-brother Dyce on Saturday.

William Longsword’s top-class son DYCE, winner of last season’s G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship, made a welcome return to the winners circle when he won at Turffontein on Saturday. Under 62kgs, the Piere Strydom ridden gelding showed his class when bounding home to land Saturday’s F&I Insurance Pinnacle Stakes (1000m) by three-parts of a length.

Trained by Lucky Houdalakis, and owned by his breeder David Shawe, six-year-old Dyce has now won eight of 18 starts, with Dyce also victorious in last season’s G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants and Listed Golden Loom Handicap as well as the 2021 G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes.

The gelding looks again destined to contest some of South Africa’s bigger sprint races this season, where Dyce looks sure to make his presence felt.

His sire William Longsword was responsible for two more winners at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday, where the Klawervlei sire’s daughters PRINCESS OF BAYEUX and FESTIVAL CHIC won races five and eight respectively.

Trained, like both William Longsword and Captain Al, Princess Of Bayeux was given a fine ride, by Oswald Noach, to win Saturday’s RaceCape Powered by Hollywoodbets Class 4 (F and M) in game fashion.

Noach bought the John Kinsley bred and owned filly with a storming late which saw Princess Of Bayeux get up to win by a long head. The inform Princess Of Bayeux has now won two of her last three starts for her connections.

Her paternal half-sister FESTIVAL CHIC provided William Longsword with a third success on Saturday when she won the Join The Euphoria www.capeturfclub.co.za Cape C Stakes (F and M) over 1400 metres.

The Brett Crawford trained filly, under a good ride from Louis Mxothwa, made it two wins in a row and two wins from just four starts when she scored a convincing, near half a length win. Bred by Klawervlei Stud, the progressive Festival Chic races for Jason Murugasa.

Also sire of this season’s Listed Betway Spring Spree Stakes winner BACK IN BUSINESS, William Longsword had another smart winner when his daughter LADYBUG made it two wins from just four starts when victorious at Hollywoodbets Greyville last Wednesday.

Captain Of All’s smart son wins again

Klawervlei Stud’s triple G1 winning sire CAPTAIN OF ALL (Captain Al) has a number of smart prospects to his name this season.

One of these is the very speedy sprinter LUNARCAM, a courageous winner at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.

Trained by Stuart Ferrie, the classy five-year-old was always up with the pace in Sunday’s Follow Gold Circle On Facebook Pinnacle Stakes (1000m) and kept finding more in the closing stages to beat SHIPHOLIA (William Longsword) by a neck.

The race was a triumph for Captain Of All, who is also sire of the third place finisher CAPTAIN BOMBSHELL.

Now a six time winner, the Ridgemont Highlands bred Lunarcam, runner up in last season’s Listed LHKIR In December Umngeni Handicap, earned has won or finished second in each of his last four starts.

The gelding races for Dr Manfred Rohwer, Messrs B D Airey, J Te Riele, E Cantatore, W Fyvie & G Teichman.

Scottsville was also a happy hunting ground for Captain Of All, who won both the G1 Gold Medallion and G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint at that track.

Twice Over relative maintains his unbeaten record

Klawervlei Stud’s four time G1 winning stallion TWICE OVER (Observatory) hails from an exceptional family, and this wonderful female line has been in the news yet again through the deeds of unbeaten three-year-old OMBUDSMAN (Night Of Thunder).

The latter made it four wins from four starts when victorious in Sunday’s G3 Prix du Prince d’Orange at ParisLongchamp, with Ombudsman looking a very exciting prospect indeed.

Impressive on good ground in the Listed Prix Nureyev at Deauville last month, the 3-5 favourite raced in the box seat behind the leader First Look and was gifted a clear run up the rail as that G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up drifted left passing the two furlong marker. Green and errant for William Buick on the run to the line, the Gosdens’ upwardly-mobile colt veered off a true line twice to interfere with the similarly progressive Henri-Francois Devin trainee Start Of Day close home but was allowed to keep the race after an inquiry. Start Of Day was half a length behind at the line.

Godolphin Managing Director for UK and Dubai Hugh Anderson said, “William said that Ombudsman is a very good horse who is a little bit green and perhaps that is what we saw in the final stages. I am really delighted and John and Thady have campaigned him superbly, with the win at Deauville and now here. The expectation is that he is going to be a very good 4-year-old and he’s definitely coming back next year–I’m not sure about whether he will race again this year.”

Ombudsman is out of the Dansili mare Syndicate, a great granddaughter of G1 Emirates Prix Du Moulin De Longchamp winner ALL AT SEA (Riverman). The latter is a half-sister to Twice Over’s granddam QUANDARY (Blushing Groom).

Twice Over’s lengthy list of high-class performers include 2023 G1 SplashOut Cape Derby/G1 Daily News 2000 winner SEE IT AGAIN, a three-parts brother to the Twice Over sired champion DO IT AGAIN.

Recently gelded, See It Again is being aimed at a tilt at the R6 million G1 Betway Summer Cup.
