Klawervlei Stud’s homebred Cape Guineas winner WILLIAM LONGSWORD has had another good season in 2022-2023, and the son of Captain Al struck yet again when his daughter VIRGINIA SWEET won the Listed East Cape Oaks (2000m) at Fairview on Friday. Virginia Sweet provided trainer Glen Kotzen with a 100% strike rate on Friday, with the filly her trainer’s sole representative on the card.
Under Ashton Arries, Virginia Sweet kicked clear in the closing stages of the Listed feature and powered away to hold off classy filly SILVERLINKS (Silvano) and land her biggest win to date by just over a length.
Owned and bred by Lammerskraal Stud, three-year-old Virginia Sweet, a half-sister to the TWICE OVER sired champion DO IT AGAIN, has now won twice from 13 starts and she will, no doubt, be a hugely valuable broodmare when she retires to the paddocks.
Virginia Sweet was one of two winners for her sire at Fairview on Friday, with the William Longsword filly KILMONIVAIG victorious in the third race on the card.
Already sire of the likes of DYCE, BON VIVANT and REMEMBER WHEN, William Longsword’s current flagbearers also include the likes of MELECH and BACK IN BUSINESS. The latter is unbeaten in two starts, with that three-year-old having followed up a debut win with a fluent victory over 1160 metres.
His sire William Longsword has four lots on offer at the 2023 National Yearling Sale including a full-brother (Lot 89) to Listed Secretariat Stakes winner BON VIVANT.
