Klawervlei Stud’s homebred G1 Cape Guineas winner WILLLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) had a notable double at Turffontein on Saturday. Not only did William Longsword filly ZENOBIA’S GOLD win the sixth race, but another daughter of the Klawervlei sire, DELLA’S SWORD, landed the ninth and final race.
William Longsword went close to having a treble on Saturday with his son LONGSWORD finishing second, beaten a short-head, in Turffontein’s eighth race.
Consistent filly Zenobia’s Gold showed plenty of heart when she won the GG Gaming FM 76 Handicap over 1600 metres. Under a great ride from an inform Gavin Lerena, the Sean Tarry trained three-year-old flew up late to win by nearly half a length.
Bred by Klawervlei, the Sean Tarry Racing (Pty) Ltd owned Zenobia’s Gold has won three of her last six starts and she has built up a good record with Gavin Lerena.
William Longsword mare Della’s Sword made much of the running to land the Next Turffontein Racemeeting Thursday 18 July Mr 66 Handicap over 1160 metres. The Brett and James Crawford trained mare kept finding in Saturday’s contest to score a shade cosily by half a length.
Another bred by Klawervlei, the Gwendolyn MacGregor owned Della’s Sword had finished third in her two starts prior to her latest win.
Della’s Sword is out of the Galileo mare Della Scala, making her bred on the same WILLIAM LONGSWORD/GALILEO cross as this season’s G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship hero DYCE.
