Regally bred six-year-old GIMME A PRINCE (Gimmethegreenlight), whose dam is a G1 winning half-sister to Klawervlei’s inform sire WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al), showed his class when he stormed home to a brilliant win in the G1 HKJC World Pool Cape Flying Championship (1000m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
Trained by Dean Kannemeyer, the Khaya Stables bred and owned gelding put some top-class sprinters to the sword, when he romped home to win the Cape’s premier sprint by a widening five and three quarter lengths.
(Gimme A Prince’s close relative William Longsword is the sire of 2024 G1 HKJC World Pool Cape Flying Championship winner DYCE, who ran fourth in Saturday’s contest).
Ridden to victory by Craig Zackey (who described him as one of the best sprinters in the world after the win), Gimme A Prince had also won the G1 Pongracz Cape Flying Championship back in 2023, after which he went on to claim the 2023 G1 Golden Horse Sprint.
Gimme A Prince, who was not disgraced when third in the 2025 G1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate, is out of G1 SA Fillies Sprint/G3 Poinsettia Stakes winner REAL PRINCESS (Trippi), whose half-brother William Longsword continues to churn out high-class winners.
Real Princess has proved to be a top-class producer, with her offspring also including this season’s G3 Baker McVeigh Diana Stakes winner GIMMIE’S COUNTESS (Gimmethegreenlight).
William Longsword’s late, great sire Captain Al has also been in the news this season. Not only is Captain Al’s Klawervlei bred son ONE WORLD the sire of recent G1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate winner ONE STRIPE, but Captain Al also features as the broodmare sire of Saturday’s G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met winner EIGHT ON EIGHTEEN (Lancaster Bomber).
Remarkably, One Stripe and Eight On Eighteen ran second in the 2024 G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas.
William Longsword, who had yearlings make up to R750 000 at the recent Summer Sale, could be represented by his son THE CANE TRAIN in Saturday’s G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas and by daughter WILLY MEET AGAIN in the same day’s G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas.
