Twice Over relative wins Prince Of Wales Stakes

Klawervlei Stud’s four time G1 winning stallion TWICE OVER (Observatory) had a handsome update to his pedigree when his relative OMBUDSMAN (Night Of Thunder) won the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday.

In the process, Ombudsman made amends for Twice Over, who ran second in the 2010 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and fourth in the same race in 2009 and fifth in 2011.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, four-year-old Ombudsman overcame trouble in running to claim his biggest win to date. Ombudsman, ridden by William Buick in the blue silks of Godolphin, was repeatedly short of room until over a furlong out, but he picked up strongly when in the clear and won going away by two lengths.

Last season’s Champion Stakes winner Anmaat, who had every chance when produced to lead inside the final couple of furlongs, finished runner-up, while See The Fire, the only filly in the race, was a further two and a half lengths back in third.

Ombudsman failed to make it to the racecourse as a juvenile but progressed well as a three-year-old and won all four starts in 2024, notably the Group 3 Prix du Prince d’Orange at Longchamp.

He had been an encouraging runner-up to Almaqam, when giving away 3 lb, in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes on his return at Sandown last month.

Ombudsman, who has won five of six starts, is out of SYNDICATE (Dansili), whose fourth dam LOST VIRTUE (Cloudy Dawn) is the third dam of Twice Over.

This is also the family of this season’s top-class son COSMIC YEAR (Kingman), who ran second in the 2025 G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.

Klawervlei Stud’s blue blooded stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) sports a female line which continues to impress.
On Saturday, exciting two-year-old GIMMIE RULES (Gimmethegreenlight), whose dam is a half-sister to William Longsword, made the perfect start to his career when making a winning debut at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

Trained by Dean Kannemeyer, the Khaya Stables bred and owned colt made a big impression in Saturday’s Maiden Juvenile Plate (1200m). Under Craig Zackey, Gimmie Rules stormed home to get up and win first time out by a length.

The regally bred colt, who looks destined for bigger and better things, is a full-brother to multiple G1 winner GIMME A PRINCE, G3 Baker McVeigh Diana Stakes winner GIMMIE’S COUNTESS and Listed City Of Cape Town Jet Master Stakes winner THE REAL PRINCE. The latter holds an entry for the 2025 G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Gimmie Rules is the fourth winner from as many runners for William Longsword’s top-class half-sister REAL PRINCESS (Trippi). The latter won six times with her victories including triumphs in the G1 South African Fillies Sprint and G3 Poinsettia Stakes.

Klawervlei Stud’s exciting young stallion KOMMETDIEDING (Elusive Fort) gained yet another update to his stellar female line on Sunday.

Promising two-year-old GIMMEFORSURE (Gimmethegreenlight), who hails from the same family as Kommetdieding, made an impressive winning debut at Turffontein. The Mike and Mathew De Kock trained filly was sent off as a 9/4 shot for Sunday’s 4Racing Welcomes You Maiden Juvenile Plate (1100m) and duly lived up to expectations. Under Callan Murray, the regally bred Gimmeforsure hit the front 150m from home and drew off to win by just over a length and a quarter.

Owned by Mr Murugasa, the Boland Stud bred Gimmeforsure is out of SUREFIRE (Count Dubois), a three time winning half-sister to G3 King’s Cup winner PIRATE’S GOLD (Rich Man’s Gold) and dam of the very smart QUASIFORSURE. Surefire’s granddam RIDING LIGHT (Top Ville) also ranks as the third dam of the top-class KOMMETDIEDING.

The latter, who, like recent G1 Betfred Derby winner LAMBOURN (Australia), hails from the powerful Sadler’s Wells male line, won or placed in 16 of 18 starts and won both the 2021 G1 Vodacom Durban July and 2022 G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met.

The Klawervlei Stud bred MIA MOO (Vercingetorix) showed her class when she won the G1 South African Fillies Sprint brought to you by The Witness at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Saturday. Trained by Sean Tarry, four-year-old Mia Moo made it a hatrick of graded wins when she won Saturday’s R1 000 000 sprint for fillies and mares. 

Under Callan Murray, Mia Moo was produced with a perfectly timed run, with the filly just getting up to win by a short-head. 

Winner of the G3 4Racing Sycamore Sprint and G2 TAB Camellia Stakes at her two previous starts, Mia Moo has won six of 16 starts and she has earned R1 300 825 in stakes. The filly, who is owned by Sandy and Eugene Arundel in partnership with World Sports Betting, was a R300 000 buy from the 2022 National Yearling Sale. 

Mia Moo is the daughter of the Klawervlei-bred champion Vercingetorix and Listed Irridescence Stakes queen LEEWARD (Captain Al).

Klawervlei Stud’s homebred G1 Cape Guineas winning stallion WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) looks to have come up with a potentially smart two-year-old in the form of COUNT OF ROUEN.
The latter made the perfect start to his career when he made a winning debut at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.

Trained by Peter Muscutt, Count Of Rouen (9/2) was given a fine ride by Serino Moodley.
The latter bought his mount with a strong late run, which saw the colt storm home to claim Wednesday’s Greyville Convention Centre Maiden Juvenile Plate (1200m) by nearly a length and three quarters.

Bred by Riverton Stud, the promising two-year-old races for Messrs Tony Zackey, H J Da Silva, B W Hamilton, S Perumal, Dr R Rotham & Mrs Roslyn Coetzee.

Count Of Rouen’s sire William Longsword has another promising two-year-old to his name this season in the form of NORTH POINT, a winner of two of just five starts.

William Longsword is one of a growing number of Captain Al sons making his mark at stud.
