Klawervlei Stud’s triple G1 winning stallion, and former Equus Champion, CAPTAIN OF ALL (Captain Al) made headlines at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday when his son CAPTAIN BOMBSHELL won the Marula Sprint (1200m) over a high-class field.

Under Siphesihle Hlengwa, the four-year-old kept finding more in the closing stages to hold off favourite, and multiple graded stakes winner, WILLIAM ROBERTSON (Rafeef), and score by nearly a length.

Trained by Garth Puller, Captain Bombshell races for Mr Chintalloo.

The gelding showed tremendous promise at two, when Captain Bombshell finished fourth in the G1 Gold Medallion on just his second start.

Bred by Haras Del Carmo, Captain Bombshell has now won four times, with his previous efforts also including a triumph in the 2023 SABC Sport Durban Dash, where he accounted for such graded stakes winners as GALLA VANTING (Querari) and RULERSHIP (William Longsword).

His sire Captain Of All continues to come up with smart performers with the champion son of Captain Al also the sire of this season’s Listed Southeaster Sprint winner KISS ME CAPTAIN and this season’s Listed City Of Cape Town Sophomore Sprint runner up CAPTAIN ARROW.

Klawervlei Stud’s homebred sire WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) has had a wonderful few weeks, and his great run continued when William Longsword came up with four winners over the past weekend.

His first success came on Friday, when William Longsword filly TIPSY TINA won the fifth race run at Fairview. Runner up in the 2023 Listed Milkwood Stakes, four-year-old Tipsy Tina claimed the fourth win of her career when she captured Friday’s Play Soccer FM 78 Handicap (1000m).

Under Trent Mayhew, the Zietsman Oosthuizen trained filly stormed home to score by a length and a quarter, with another William Longsword daughter, LADY MAJORCA, finishing third. Bred by Klawervlei, the well bred Tipsy Tina races for owner Suzette Viljoen.

Her sire William Longsword struck again at Turffontein on Saturday when his Klawervlei Stud-bred son BOB got off the mark in convincing fashion. Under Jason Gates, the Tony Peter trained three-year-old came with a late flourish to win Saturday’s Wilgerbosdrift Maiden Plate (1160m) by a neck, despite being bumped close home.

Racing for Glistian (Pty) Ltd, Bob had finished second in each of his two previous starts.

His G1 Cape Guineas winning sire looks to have sired a three-year-old of real promise in the form of WILLIAM IRON ARM, with the latter catching the eye when finishing third in Saturday’s G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas.

Bred on the same William Longsword/Galileo cross as recent G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship winner DYCE, William Iron Arm has now won twice from four starts and he looks an exciting prospect.

The red hot William Longsword had a double at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday with his sons HEAVEN’S WILL and IMAGINABLE winning the second and fourth races respectively.

Trained by Dennis Bosch, gelded three-year-old Heaven’s Will stayed on strongly, under Muzi Yeni, to win Sunday’s GallopTV Youtube Channel Maiden Plate (1200m) by nearly three-parts of a length.

Owned by his trainer in partnership with Mr Da Costa, Heaven’s Will, who has won or been placed in three of his four starts, was bred by Varsfontein Stud.

William Longsword’s great run continued when his Varsfontein bred son IMAGINABLE landed Sunday’s Bet With Tabgold -The Intelligent Bet! Maiden Plate over 1600 metres.

Under Rachel Venniker, the Alyson Wright trained gelding, who races for owner Rikesh Sewgolam, powered home down the outside of the track to break his maiden by nearly a length and three quarters.

Klawervlei Stud’s four time G1 winning stallion TWICE OVER (Observatory) was the toast of Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday when his sons DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE and SEE IT AGAIN finished first and fourth respectively in the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met. 

Both Double Superlative and See It Again are owned by Nick Jonsson, with Nick also a part-owner of the former Twice Over sired champion DO IT AGAIN, and he also owns the stallion’s high-class son MUCHO DINERO.

Winner of the 2021 G1 Cape Guineas, Double Superlative showed a return to the high-class form he had shown earlier in his career when storming home to land the 2024 Met in scintillating fashion.

Under a superbly timed ride from Daniel Muscutt, the five-year-old entire split runners late on before bursting out of the pack to get up and nab the front running RASCALLION (Vercingetorix) close home and win by just under half a length.

A second consecutive Met winner for trainer Justin Snaith, Double Superlative was bred by Patricia Devine Investments (Pty) Ltd. The entire, who also finished third in the 2022 G1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby, has now earned more than R1.96 million.

In landing the 2024 Met, Double Superlative made amends for his paternal half-brother Do It Again, with the latter finishing runner up in the 2019 renewal.

Twice Over went close to having a graded stakes double on Saturday with his Nick Jonsson owned son TRIPLE TIME finishing a short-head second in the G3 New Turf Carriers Western Cape Stayers.

The former champion has had a magnificent season in 2023-2024 thus far, with Twice Over sons DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE, SEE IT AGAIN, MUCHO DINERO and SENSO UNICO having won all of the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met, G2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes, G2 Anthonij Rupert Wine Premier Trophy, Listed Woolavington Stakes and Listed Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy respectively. In fact, Twice Over sons Senso Unico and Triple Time finished first and second respectively in the Settlers Trophy.

Klawervlei Stud’s homebred G1 Cape Guineas winner WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) enjoyed a big payday on Saturday when his top-class son DYCE roared home to capture the G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship (1000m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Winner of both the G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants and Listed Golden Loom Handicap earlier in the season, the Lucky Houdalakis trained Dyce picked up his first G1 win with a sparkling display in Saturday’s sprint.
Under an inform Craig Zackey, the five-year-old entire tracked the tote favourite THUNDERSTRUCK (Rafeef) before plugging on down the inside rail to get up and land the R890 625 first place prize by just under half a length.

In the process, Dyce provided his owner-breeder David Shawe with his first G1 success.

Klawervlei Stud’s homebred G1 Cape Guineas winner WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) has made a great start to 2024, and the strapping bay was at it again when he came up with two more winners at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday afternoon. The Klawervlei sire went close to having a treble on Monday, with William Longsword gelding WILLIAM RUFUS finished second in the sixth race on the Greyville card.

William Longsword’s first win on Monday came when his lightly raced daughter OFF LIMITS romped home to claim the Catch KZN Racing Maiden Plate (F&M) (1900) by over five lengths. Trained by Louis Goosen, the three-year-old, making just her third start on Monday. 

Off Limits was bred by Rathmor Stud and she races for Mario Ferreira.

William Longsword’s second success on Monday came when his daughter SLEEK AS SILK got up close home to claim the seventh race run at Greyville. 

Under a good ride from Craig Zackey, the four-year-old was dropped out to overcome a bad draw in Monday’s GallopTV Youtube Channel FM 86 Handicap (1400m) but came home strongly to get up and win a shade cosily by just over three-parts of a length.

Trained by Paul Lafferty, the John Finlayson owned Sleek As Silk has now won five times in total.

Bred by The Alchemy, Sleek As Silk has won two of her last five starts, with the filly also finishing second during that run.

Her inform sire also enjoyed success at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday, where William Longsword’s G3 winning son ITSRAININGWILLIAM romped home to land the tenth and final race by two and a quarter lengths.
