Consistent, Versatile, Classic

Klawervlei Stud’s successful sire, and former champion sprinter, CAPTAIN OF ALL (Captain Al), has made a superb start to his stud career. He is steadily climbing the stallion log and now sits at 12th place of active sires in SA.

South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2018-2019, Captain Of All’s eye-catching first crop was headed by dual G2 stakes winner SHANGO, stakes winning two-year-olds CAPTAIN ANNE BONNY and WHAT YOU ARE, and millionaire CARTEL CAPTAIN.

The Equus Champion’s second crop was equally impressive, with Captain Of All’s second crop topped by G1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby/G1 Daily News 2000 winner LINEBACKER, G2 Pospack SA Fillies Nursery queen SPRINGS OF CARMEL, and the stakes placed two-year-olds CAPTAIN’S FLO and EMBLEM OF HOPE.

Captain Of All also has some talented three-year-olds this season, including the likes of CAPTAIN LANNISTER and the record-breaking CAPTAIN’S RUN.

Captain Of All -Elusive Spirit

This colt is bred on a similar cross to the Captain Al sired graded stakes winners DOOSRA, EMERALD COVE and FIORELLA, this colt, a half-brother to a winner, is out of a five time winning half-sister to G2 Betting World 1900 winner ELUSIVE SILVA (Silvano) and Listed Jockey Club Stakes runner up ESTEEMAL. The latter was sired by Captain Of All’s own sire, making this colt very closely related indeed to Esteemal. This colt’s granddam is a winning full-sister to Equus Champion, and very much inform sire, ELUSIVE FORT (Fort Wood), and this is the famous “E” family.

This colt is out of Listed Oaks Trial winner EPSOM DOWNS (Tiger Ridge). Bred on the same cross as the stakes placed CAPTAIN’S FLO (Captain Of All), this colt’s granddam is a twice winning half-sister to G1 winning champion KOCHKA (Black Minnaloushe), whose sire, like Tiger Ridge, was sired by STORM CAT (Storm Bird).

Already a Sire of a Champion & a Classic Winner

Klawervlei Stud’s versatile G1 Vodacom Durban July winner POMODORO (Jet Master) continues to catch the eye as a sire. 

South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2017-2018, Pomodoro is a proven source of high-class gallopers, with his progeny already including the likes of dual G1 winner, and Equus Champion, RETURN FLIGHT, G1 Cape Guineas winner RUSSIAN ROCK, R5 million earner CIRILLO, and short-lived G2 WSB Camellia Stakes winner GOLDEN BELLE.

Pomodoro also has a number of promising sorts waiting in the wings, with his current representatives including BLACK THORN (winner of three of his last four starts), BARZALONA (winner of the recent Need For Speed Sprint) and POMODORO’S JET. The latter made a big impression when shedding his maiden impressively on L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate day, and he looks a progressive three-year-old in the making.

The latter, also third in the G1 Empress Club Stakes, is out of a mare by one of the greatest stallions in history – GALILEO (Sadler’s Wells), and Intergalactic herself is directly descended in the female line from arguably the most famous mare in the studbook – LA TROIENNE (Teddy).

Uncle Mo (USA) – Royal Irish Lass (USA) by Saint Ballado (CAN)

Klawervlei Stud is home to the only son of outstanding sire UNCLE MO (Indian Charlie) at stud in South Africa in the form of ROYAL MO.

The latter, one of the best three-year-olds of his generation, showed top-class form in a brief racing career with Royal Mo landing the 2017 G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes and running third in the same year’s G1 Santa Anita Derby. (The winner of that Santa Anita Derby, GORMELY (Malibu Moon), has since gone on to make a promising start to his stud career, with Gormley seventh on last year’s Leading First Crop Sires in North America list).
His sire Uncle Mo, whose flagbearers in 2021 including G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner GOLDEN PAL and promising two-year-old MO DONEGAL, is one of the best stallions at stud in North America today.
Sire of 74 stakes winners from his first six crops, Uncle Mo has also shown great promise as a sire of sires, through his G1 producing sons LAOBAN and NYQUIST.

SALES RING SUCCESS FOR WILLIAM LONGSWORD

The Klawervlei Stud bred and based G1 Cape Guineas winner WILLIAM LONGSWORD (Captain Al) has enjoyed notable sales ring success this year, and the strapping bay enjoyed further such success at Thursday’s CTS Mare and Mixed Sale.

William Longsword was responsible for the top weanling sold off this year’s Mare and Mixed Sale, with his son (Lot 109), out of SECRET OF VICTORIA (Goldkeeper), knocked down for R425 000.

The regally bred colt, consigned to the sale by BBP Syndicate C/O Cape Thoroughbred Sales (As Agent), was sold to Rikesh Sewgoolam. 

His Guineas winning sire William Longsword had also enjoyed notable success at both the Cape Premier Yearling Sale and National Yearling Sale this year.

William Longsword yearlings made up to R550 000 at this year’s Premier Sale, while a filly sired by William Longsword was knocked down to John Freeman for R1 000 000 at the 2021 National Yearling Sale. 

Already the sire of nine first crop horses to have won or placed, William Longsword has 11 lots on the CTS Farm Yearling Sale, and a further 11 yearlings on sale at the KZN Yearling Sale.
